Crackdown Accountability: Nepal Detains Former PM Oli

In a decisive move toward accountability, law enforcement agencies in Nepal have arrested former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli along with former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak.

The arrests are linked to the violent suppression of Gen Z protests in September last year, which left dozens dead. A government-appointed commission had recommended prosecution, citing negligence in preventing fatal police action.

The political shift following the rise of Balendra Shah has accelerated the implementation of these recommendations. The new administration has emphasized justice for victims and transparency in governance.

Police confirmed that the arrests were conducted after consultations with senior officials and security agencies. If convicted, the accused could face significant prison terms under Nepalese law.
